Toolbar Actions
Rom Actions | Other Functionality | Bonus Features | Rominator Zip (rZip)

A nice edition to Rominator v2008 is the Action Toolbar. It is a bar of quick-action buttons that perform some of Rominator’s tasks to roms, known as ‘Rom Actions’.

To access the toolbar in Mac OS X: Click on the ‘oval’ button in the top right corner of Rominator’s window.
To access the toolbar in Windows: Under the ‘Tools’ menu, select ‘Show Toolbar’.

2_2_0

This are just the default actions. There toolbar is fully customizable, meaning you can arrange the buttons however you like, as well as put whichever actions you want in there. You can only have a maximum of 9 toolbar items.

To configure your toolbar, go into the Edit Menu and select ‘Customize Toolbar’.

2_2_1

Simply drag the items you want into the Current Toolbar location at the top of the window. You can also drag around the items in the Current Toolbar. If you overlap an item in the Current Toolbar with another item, the overlapped item will be removed from the list.

Note for Window Users: Your ‘Customize Toolbar’ window will look different. For Windows, all you need to do is transfer list items from one list to another.

Below is a list of all the functions and what they do:

Rom Actions

  • Auto-Rename - Will auto-rename the selected games based on the Naming Scheme that is customizable in the settings. If there is no database information for the game, it cannot be auto-renamed.
  • Compress - Compresses the selected games to Rominator Zip (rZip) format. rZip is a special format that is exclusive for use only in Rominator. See below the Toolbar Actions for why rZip may be good for you.
  • Decompress - Will decompress an rZip or Zip game. If a Zipped game has multiple files in it, it will grab only the NDS file and place that in place of the zip file.
  • Verify CRC32 - Allows you to calculate a game’s checksum and display it in the Rom List (if the view option for CRC32 is visible). It will compare the CRC32 with the one in the DS Database and let you know if your game is an unaltered copy.
  • Trim - This will trim the selected game, getting rid of the unused portion of the game. Because the ROM is ripped in 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 and 512 megabyte sizes, the entire game may not take up all of that space, so trimming it will reduce the file size to just the size of the game data. Trimming is very quick and takes less than 1/4 of a second per game. CAUTION: Trimming some games makes them unplayable, and once trimmed the original file cannot be restored, so be sure you have a backup of your game you are trimming.
  • Identify - Sometimes a Zip game may not show up correctly in the list, and it will not tie itself to a database entry. This is common if you compress your games with Mac OS X’s built in Archive Utility. ‘Identifying’ your games will decompress them, find the NDS game, and then give the zip file database association according to the zip file. It will also grab the icon and store it inside the Icon Database for displaying.
  • Backup Save - This function is only available on Flash Cards. This will backup the ‘.sav’ file associated with the selected game. More on dealing with save games is covered in the ‘Save Management’ section.

Other Functionality
  • Eject Flash - Ejects the currently selected flash card (Mac OS X only). This item will not be visible in Windows.
  • Display Filter - Opens the Display Filter window to filter your game list.
  • Get Info - Shows the Rom Info Pane.
  • Check Updates - Will check for any updates to the DS Database as well as program updates.
  • View Options - Shows the View Options pane for your current game list.
  • Visit Website - Takes you to this website. Bet you would have never gotten that one.
  • Send Feedback - Opens the Feedback Window to send bug reports
  • Known Bugs - Shows the Known Bugs window.
  • Settings - Opens up the Settings/Preferences window.
  • Customize Toolbar - Takes you to this spot.

Rominator Zip (rZip)

As mentioned a few times in the documentation, Rominator has its own proprietary compressed format called Rominator Zip, or rZip. rZip not only compresses your games better than Zip, but it also allows seamless integration with Rominator, no matter the game. These are the benefits of using rZip over regular Zip:
  • rZip games contain the game header, cartridge code, and rom version. Standard zip does not have any of these, and the game would need to be decompressed to retrieve that data.
  • rZip games have the CRC directly in the header. This allows for instant verification of whether or not your games are clean. Some Zip programs will not compress properly and will give a CRC of 00000000.
  • rZip games have the icon accessible without the need to decompress the game.
  • rZip games are compressed better than standard Zip.
The only downside to rZip is that it is not a widespread format as Rominator uses it only. There is a tool that can compress or decompress rZipped games in the Downloads section called ‘rZipper’.
